Exclusive Mode

There are few reasons when you would want to sign on to Collect! using Exclusive mode.

If you are the only one who will ever use Collect! and you are licensed as a single user, any attempt to sign on using Shared mode will be denied.

If you have several users of Collect and are licensed for more than one user, you may still want to sign on in Exclusive mode for speed and control.

Some processes can be completed only in Exclusive mode. For example, you cannot do a maintenance while in Shared mode. Exporting or upgrading the database cannot be done while other users are in the system. You will be prompted to sign in using Exclusive mode when you attempt Collect!'s functions that require this. Then you will have to make sure that everyone is out of the system, and sign on using Exclusive mode to proceed.

Some processes may speed up considerably when you are in Exclusive mode, depending on your system. Perhaps you are doing an large import, or archiving some accounts, or running a contact plan over thousands of accounts. You may be touching several accounts that people may be working. Using Exclusive mode avoids any user interference in the process you are attempting to complete. You may want to consider doing the process while signed in using Exclusive mode.

Exclusive mode takes away the overhead of record locking management. Eliminating this need speeds up many processes. Running the process on the server in Exclusive mode may be the most efficient way to complete the task.

So, if you would like to ensure that your process takes the least amount of time and impacts the fewest number of users, then sign in on the Server in Exclusive mode. Get the job done quickly and then allow others to sign in.

Hardware upgrades can enhance speed. This should be seriously considered if you do start to notice a bit of a slow down.

Lastly, maintenance can help with speed. A poorly maintained database will slow everything down. But remember, maintenance must be run in Exclusive mode.
